Origami cube – a tutorial*
To construct an origami cube you will need to create six identical folded shapes. These shapes are then slotted together to make a cube.
You will need
- at least six sheets of square origami paper
Creating the folded shape
Constructing the folded shape needed to make an origami cube is an eight step process. These steps are outlined below:
Step One. In half.
Take a square piece of origami paper and fold it in half.
Step Two. Wardrobe doors.
Make wardrobe doors by folding the sides of the paper to the centre.
Step Three. The shape with no name.
Fold up the bottom right corner.
Step Four. Parallelogram
Turn 180 degrees. Fold up the bottom right corner.
Step Five. Small Triangles.
Open up the parallelogram and fold in the two small triangles.
Step Six. Big Triangle
Open up the wardrobe door and fold in the large triangle.
Step Seven. Big Triangle Two.
Turn 180 degrees. Open up the wardrobe door and fold in the large triangle.
Step Eight. Flaps.
Turn over and fold up two triangular flaps.
Assemble the cube
Once you have made six folded paper shapes you can connect them together. All the flaps must sit in the same direction, like in these photos.
When putting the folded paper shapes together keep the flaps of adjoining pieces perpendicular to one another. All the flaps must be slotted into a side of the cube, no flaps should be loose inside the cube.
Enjoy your cube building. If you have any questions or suggestions post a comment below. Thanks.
*This tutorial is to support a ‘Train the Trainer’ training session. By the end of the session participants will be able to:
- construct the folded sheets that make up an origami cube
- put together six folded sheets to make an origami cube
- demonstrate to others how to make an origami cube
